China has become the world's second largest country in titanium dioxide production and marketing. In sharp contrast, the competitiveness of China's titanium dioxide industry is still low, and there is a widespread phenomenon of low-level technology and low-grade product surplus, It is worrying. To this end, China Coating Industry Association recently held the "2007 pigment application technology seminar in coatings" in Shanghai. Industry experts put forward their insights around the overall upgrading of China's titanium dioxide industry and the transformation from a world power in production and marketing

Yuewangkun, Secretary General of China Coating Industry Association, believes that in 2006, China's coating and pigment industry ushered in a period of market integration, characterized by rapid development, significant changes and outstanding difficulties

after years of adjustment, the scale of titanium dioxide industry of Chinese enterprises has expanded and the industrial concentration has increased. 200 capable of data transmission, storage, record printing and network transmission printing. In 6 years, the national titanium dioxide production capacity increased by 250000 tons, with a total production capacity of about 1million tons/year; The output of titanium white pigment was 860000 tons, an increase of nearly 160000 tons over the previous year, maintaining a high growth rate of 25% in 2005; The consumption of titanium dioxide has accounted for 19% of the world's total consumption of titanium dioxide, an increase of 3 percentage points over the previous year; The export volume of titanium dioxide was 194000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 23.1%; The number of manufacturers whose annual production and sales volume of titanium dioxide powder is more than 40000 tons has increased from one in the previous year to three. The largest manufacturer, Shandong Dongjia titanium dioxide, has an output of more than 70000 tons. The output of the top 10 titanium dioxide manufacturers has accounted for 44.1% of the total output of titanium dioxide in China

at the same time, China has made progress in technological innovation. Titanium dioxide enterprises generally carry out process transformation aimed at reducing the emission of "three wastes" in the production process and improving product quality. For example, Sichuan longmang Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. increased independent research and development, creatively realized the organic grafting of phosphorus chemical industry, sulfur chemical industry and titanium chemical industry, and solved the bottleneck restricting the production of titanium dioxide by traditional sulfuric acid method in China

however, on the whole, there is still a certain gap in domestic technology and products compared with foreign countries. Due to the lack of high-end products in China, the import of titanium dioxide in China stopped falling and rose again in 2006. After the decline in 2005, the iron content in molten aluminum of Chalco Shanxi new materials Co., Ltd. dropped to less than 0.1% on average and rose to the level of 250000 tons imported in 2004; The average price of import and export products is 1920 dollars/ton and 1403 dollars/ton respectively, with a price difference of 517 dollars. Facing the gap in technology and product structure with foreign titanium dioxide enterprises, China's titanium dioxide enterprises must enhance their urgency and initiative, fully grasp the trend of future development and change, take improving the industry competitiveness as the starting point, strengthen their self-cultivation and improve the comprehensive strength of enterprises

focus on resources and environmental protection

with the rapid development of China's pigment industry, resource consumption is increasing, and the contradiction of resource shortage is becoming increasingly acute. The most prominent is the insufficient allocation of titanium resources. It is estimated that during the "Eleventh Five Year Plan" period, the annual output of titanium dioxide in China will exceed 1.5 million tons, and more than 2 million tons of titanium concentrate and a considerable amount of high titanium slag will be required at that time

Quying, senior engineer of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Planning Institute, pointed out that although China is one of the countries with the richest titanium resources in the world, more than 90% of China's ilmenite is paragenetic rock ore, with low titanium dioxide grade, complex composition and difficult mining, so the high-grade titanium resources that can be effectively utilized are very limited. With the current titanium mining scale and technical level in China, the quantity and quality of titanium ore are far from meeting the needs of the development of titanium dioxide industry. It was learned from the seminar that last year, China Coating Industry Association, together with relevant departments, finally applied for the tariff number of high titanium slag through unremitting efforts, which solved the problem that the purchase cost of imported high titanium slag could be reduced by about 40% in the past, and the slag needed to pay 4.5% ~ 6.5% tariff. Since January 1 this year, China has adopted the new tariff number for importing high titanium slag and implemented zero tariff
